Shelley High School
Shelley Staff
Travis Hobson- Head Coach
Coach Hobson has been coaching at Shelley since 2004, where he helped previous head coach Dwight Richins to three of his four state titles as his Varsity Offensive and Defensive Line Coach. He took over for the departed Richins in 2012 and posted a 12-0 record in his first year then 11-1 in his second. His combined record is 23-1 with back-to-back state titles.
Coach Hobson also takes on the Running Backs and Quarterbacks position coaching duties. He came to Shelley after playing at Idaho State University and currently teaches US Government and Psychology.
Richard Hobbs- Varsity Defensive Coordinator, Linebackers
Coach Hobbs serves as the Varsity Defensive Coordinator and is the longest tenured coach on the staff. Having coached at Shelley for 22 years, he has become an icon synonymous with Shelley Football.
In 2012, Coach Hobbs led the most dominant defense in Shelley history and statistically, the leading defense in Idaho's 3A classification. Coach Hobbs is also the program's linebacker coach where he coached Trevin Swensen, who recently signed to play football for Snow College in 2013.
Coach Hobbs is a graduate of Shelley High School and played for Brigham Young University where he was a member of the 1984 National Championship team.
Jake Monahan- Varsity Offensive Coordinator, Offensive Line
Coach Monahan joins the Russet Varsity staff having been promoted from his duties as the Scouting Coordinator and Underclassmen Defensive Coordinator in 2013. He brings to the Russet varisty group a wealth of practical and theoretical knowledge.
Monahan is a graduate of Teton High School, where he was a two-way stand out. He began his coaching career immediately following his graduation and spent time at Teton, Madison High School and joined the Shelley staff in 2010.
Coach Monahan also joined the Shelley teaching staff and is currently teaching US History and Military History after graduating from Idaho State University in 2013.
Akilah Lacey- Varsity Special Teams Coordinator/WR/DB
Coach Lacey is in his third season with the Shelley Russet Football Program and has brought to Shelley a new attitude and “swagger” that was needed at the wide receiver/defensive back positions. He comes to Shelley after playing at Idaho State University, where he played for five years and was a 2007 NFL draft prospect.
Under Coach Lacey, McKay Cannon broke a number of Shelley Football records, including most receiving yards (1185), most receptions (57) and his position group shattered the total yards receiving record with 2,829 total yards. Coach Lacey is in the process of developing an arsenal of perimeter weapons and a defensive backfield that was instrumental in gaining a +14 turnover ratio in 2012.
Barry Johnson- Head Strength & Conditioning, Freshmen D.C.
Coach Johnson is far and away the most experienced coach on staff and is, no doubt, THE secret to Shelley High School athletic success. Coach Johnson has made career stops in various coaching capacities at University of the Pacific, Washington State University, Brigham Young University, University of Virginia (where he coached Tiki and Ronde Barber), and served as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Idaho State University (where he coached both Coach Lacey and Coach Hobson) and University of Utah.
Coach Johnson holds a B.S. degree from BYU and recently finished his Masters degree in Sports Psychology. Coach Johnson recently began his Doctoral research nd expects to earn his PhD in the next two years. Under his guidance, all Russet athletic programs have seen increases in size, speed and strength, primarily football, where five players from 2012-2013 earned scholarships to play on to the collegiate level.
Mike Messick- J.V. Defensive Coordinator, LBs, OL
Coach Messick rejoins the Russet Football staff after taking a year off to become the Hobbs Middle School Principal. Prior to his temporary hiatus, Coach Messick was the Underclassmen Defensive Coordinator and was instrumental in the successful growth of the JV and Freshmen teams.
Coach Messick is a proud product of Shelley High School where he was a two way starter and a multi-sport standout for the Russets. He is a wise and valued member of the coaching staff whose calm and unwavering demeanor is sought on gamedays and planning meetings alike.
Coach Messick has been a member of the Russet football staff for a long time and has been a part of multiple state championship runs. He is second in tenure only to Coach Hobbs.
Travis Perez- Frosh Offensive Coordinator, Co-Scouting Coordinator
Burke Davis- JV Offensive Coordinator, Running Backs
Coach Perez joined the Russet Football program in 2013 as the Under Classmen Offensive and Defensive Lines Coach. He was pat of a minor shufling of coaches in 2014 and is now serving as the Freshmen Offensive Coordinator as well as Co-Scouting Coordinator with Coach Hobson.
Coach Perez comes to Shelley High School from within the district at Hobbs Middle School where he has taught History and Spanish for 9 years. While at Hobbs, Perez also managed the Middle School wrestling program and has served as an assistant wrestling coach at Shelley High School for 3 years.
Coach Perez teaches Spanish and History at the high school and plans to continue working for the wrestling program as well.
Coach Davis, currently in his 8th season with the Russet Football Program, comes to the team after a stellar playing career as a Russet. As a former running back himself, he has demonstrated an aptitude for teaching the finer points of the position to the younger Shelley athletes. In his tenure at Shelley, Coach Davis has laid the groundwork for a number of outstanding running backs as freshman and JV football players; such as Aaron Adams (2010 1st Team Running Back, 4A and Post Register Player of the Year) and Tate Brown (2011 1st Team High Country Conference Running Back).
As the Offensive Coordinator, Coach Davis has led the 2012 Freshmen to an undefeated season. He was also recently promoted to the position of Assistant Principal at Shelley High School after earning his Masters degree in Education Administration.
Medical Staff
Bryan Huntsman, who most in the Shelley Football circles simply refer to as "Coach" , is more than just a valuable asset to the Russet Football program. Keeping the football players healthy inevitably becomes nearly a full time job during the height of the season and Bryan has graciously allowed his clinic to be opened up to Shelley athletes for injury assessment, treatment and rehabilitation.
Through his efforts on game days and throughout the week, issues of health are less of a concern and coaches are confident in his abilities to get players back on the field as quickly as possible.
Brad Erikson, D.O.- Team Doctor
Dr. Erikson has been volunteering his time for the past few years serving as Russet Football's physician. Dr. Erikson is a licensed Family Practitioner, is a Healthgrade's Recognized Doctor and practices locally in the Shelley-Idaho Falls area.
Dr. Erikson's service has become more important in the past few years with the recent passage of Idaho's new concussion laws which require a Board Certified physician to clear a football player before he can return to the playing field.
