Overview
Shelley High School and the Russet football program enjoy a storied history of success. Nothing sums this ideal up better than the current football team motto: "A Culture of Excellence built on the values of Tradition, Accountability and Respect.
Located in Shelley, Idaho with a student population of approximately 615 students, the Russets are fortunate to have such a history of winning, academic success and seeing its players play on to the next level.
Team
The Russets have garnered a number of State Championships, and is quickly climbing the ranks of all time leading Idaho programs. Also, in the last decade, the Russet Football program has been a dominating force in the region winning 10 of 11 district titles.

Coaches
Travis Hobson is the current head coach of the Russets and, through his second season at the helm has amassed a record of 23-1. His team was a perfect record of 12-0 during the first year of his tenure.
Coach Hobson has been able to pile up a small cache of accolades during his two season. In 2012 as well as 2013, he was named the Idaho 3A Coach of the Year, Mountain Rivers Conference Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013, as well as the 2012-2013 Male Coach of the Year, by Local News 8's Sportsline.
He served as an assistant coach at Shelley since 2004. Hobson took over for Dwight Richins who has retired from head coaching and is now serving as the superintendent of the West Jefferson School District.
Richins compiled an astounding record of 88-18 in his 9 years at Shelley while winning four state titles and laid the groundwork for a massive transition into a renowned state power.
Also a member of a modern Shelley Football coaching tree is Dave Hadley, current Russet offensive coordinator. Hadley served as the interim head coach in 2010 while Richins was deployed to Afghanistan. Hadley led the 2010 Russets to a semi-final, 3rd place finish in Shelley's first season in the 4A classification. His team fell to the Bishop Kelly Knights, the eventual 2010 champions. Hadley also currently is the head boys basketball coach.
Doug Thornhill, Chuck Johnson and Jamey Higham also served as head football coaches at Shelley High School.
Players
Many Russet football players have represented their school and community well on the football field earning countless awards and accolades. In 2012, McKay Cannon was named MRC MVP, Chad Leckington, MRC Offensive Player of the Year and Trevin Swensen, MRC Co-Defensive Player of the Year. All three also earned All-Idaho 1st Team honors as well.
The Russets placed 11 players on the MRC All-Conference 1st Team and 9 on the 2nd team. An additional five players were named to the All-Idaho 2nd Team.
